Comme l’herbier ou des poèmes, la discothèque est une opération sur le monde, une opération, je veux dire, proprement démiurgique ; le cabinet de curiosité est une astuce qu’a trouvée la collection pour ne pas sombrer dans la névrose.
Pendant trois années, depuis que j’ai changé d’ordinateur et rangé ma discothèque, j’écoute des disques. J’estime, qu’après en avoir écouté plus de mille deux cents albums, je suis en mesure d’avoir une idée des disques qui me paraissent les plus intéressants, dépaysants, émouvants, dansants et autres.
Je les ai évalués à l’aune du seul outil qui vaille : le perspectivisme, c’est-à-dire une juste dose de subjectif et d’objectif. J’ai noté chaque piste de 1 à 5 (avec le temps, j’ai pris l’habitude, et c’est le plus simple), en tenant compte aussi de la ‘capacité’ de chaque artiste/œuvre. On ne demande pas à un saxophoniste bop exactement les mêmes qualités d’écriture qu’à un chansonnier. Ou du moins, si on cherche la qualité, pas sur les mêmes ‘critères’. J’ai ensuite simplement attribué la moyenne de ces notes au disque. Je suis un peu effrayé par la teneur statistique, ou plus simplement scolaire de ce travail, mais c’est le jeu n’est-ce pas ?
Nota. Le fait que le journal Rolling Stones ait mis à jour sa propre liste ordinée, chamboulant la première édition de 2004, est un pur hasard.
Nota. Il y a plusieurs listes possibles, à partir de la notation :
1. tenir compte simplement de l’ordre des notes pour tous les disques : les 100 premiers (102, compte-tenu des ex-æquo) ; c’est le classement « absolu », qui est cité ci-dessous (dans le tableau, cela correspond à la colonne CAE) ;
2. ne garder qu’une œuvre (la meilleure) du même artiste : on arrive alors au n°140 (pour 100 œuvres, compte-tenu des ex-æquo) ; c’est le classement « sans doublon d’artiste », CA ;
3. classement par genre ; je n’aime pas les genres, mais enfin, c’est une typologie utile, et il y en a onze : blues & rythm’n’blues (choix décisif, pour l’instant, je n’ai pas repéré assez de disques de blues pensés comme tels, j’y ai de plus ajouté le reggae), jazz classique (sauf bop et free), jazz post bop (en particulier free), pop/rock, funk, musique expérimentale (? ce n’est pas tout à fait la musique conceptuelle, mais ce n’est plus tout à fait de la musique populaire), post-punk, musique électronique, hip-hop, chanson (y compris folk anglo-saxon, y compris country). Les disques sont donc affublés d’une catégorie, et généralement un même artiste reste dans la même catégorie, sauf quelques cas isolés (David Bowie, Robert Wyatt) où un disque ou un tournant de carrière est évident. On note qu’il n’y a pas de classique, enfin de musique savante, (faut-il noter les œuvres ou leurs interprétations ?), pour l’instant ; la world est balancée entre folk et pop, selon ; dans le tableau, le classement par genre est noté CG ;
4. les 100 premières notes (hors ex-æquo) : on arrive alors au numéro 586 ! Et la 100e note est 4 ! 4 sur 5 ; on voir que je ne suis pas si sévère. 585 disques ont 4 ou plus ; dans le tableau c’est le classement CS ;
En outre, pour les ex-æquo, l’ordre est celui, alphabétique, des titres d’albums.
1. Seize chefs d’œuvre.
Sortent du lot seize disques, qui à mon sens n’ont quasiment aucun défaut (et sont tous 1er ex-æquo). Les voici par ordre alphabétique du titre.
• John Coltrane, Ascension : pourquoi pas A Love Supreme (A77) est une première question. Je n’ai pas trouvé de faux-pas, mais il faut dire aussi que le disque n’a que deux pistes. En effet, les disques avec beaucoup de morceaux sont sans doute pénalisés. Une pondération devrait exister…
• The Rolling Stones, Beggar’s Banquet : pourquoi pas Let It Bleed ? A cause de Country Honk ou de You Can’t Always Get What You Want ? Pourquoi pas Sticky Fingers ? A cause de Dead Flowers. Pourquoi pas Exile On Main Street ? Il y a beaucoup de morceaux et plusieurs n’arrivent pas à ce niveau d’écriture et d’interprétation. Même Dear Doctor, qui se veut un peu une farce, est remarquablement exécutée. (Premier disque rock).
• Thelonious Monk, Brilliant Corner : eh bien que dire de plus ? du pur Monk, servi par un groupe qui dépote, Max Roach, Paul Chambers, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Pettitford, Clark Terry
• Don Cherry, Complete Communion : beaucoup de Don Cherry dans cette liste, celui-ci me paraît excellent.
• Fela Kuti, Confusion/Gentleman : là encore, deux chansons, donc ça biaise. Mais c’est remarquable. (Premier en funk.)
• AAVV, Kronos Quartet, Early Music : une exception « musique savante », dont tout le mérite revient au Kronos Quartet ; bon je crois que c’est le disque que je vais écouter toute ma vie.
• Fela Kuti, Expensive Shit : idem d’autre.
• Archie Shepp, Four For Trane : beaucoup de Shepp, qui est intarrissable et très très souvent juste ; celui-ci me paraît être le meilleur.
• Talk Talk, Laughing Stock : un autre ovni, un groupe de pop se lance dans l’expérimental, avec brio.
• David Bowie, Low : beaucoup de disques de Bowie, beaucoup de bons disques, peu d’erreurs de parcours (et encore, les plus remarquables ne sont pas si indigestes, Let’s Dance et Tonight ont moins mal vieilli que Ziggy Stardust) ; mais Low est décidément au-dessus, avec pour outsider Blackstar. C’est pour moi l’une des meilleurs pièces musicales de tous les temps.
• Andre 3000 a Madlib, Otis Benjamin : une claque. Je n’aurais pas misé un kopek sur ce disque, mais je dois bien reconnaître qu’il n’y a as de faux pas.
• Portishead, Portishead : j’ai beau retourner le problème dans tous les sens, et ce n’est pas parce qu’il est sorti à un moment crucial de ma vie, et ce n’est pas parce que je l’ai beaucoup écouté dans la Montagne Noire cet hiver-là, mais voilà : une ambiance, un paysage. Odelay (121) et Homogenic (50) sont du même acabit , ce sont ceux qui m’ont fait apprécier les machines en musique (auparavant, pas question !), mais celui-ci n’a pas de morceau plus faible.
• Alice Coltrane, Ptah, The El Daoud : je suis sévère et je peux facilement descendre des morceaux ; mais dans ce disque, Alice Coltrane est fantastique, moins pompeuse que dans d’autres disques, et va directement au cœur.
• John Coltrane, Sun Ship : celui-ci est un petit plaisir personnel. Il n’est peut-être pas parfait pour les spécialistes de Coltrane, mais je trouve que c’est le témoignage le plus fort du free, la violence maîtrisée, l’élégance de la cruauté.
• Charlie Mingus, The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady : tout simplement exceptionnel de blues, de foi, de violence, de beauté, de noir.
• Thelonious Monk, With John Coltrane : Une espèce de compilation live, avec un compagnon essentiel. Le meilleur de Monk par le meilleur de Thelonious (comme beaucoup de génies, il peine à produire un album cohérent et unique).
On note une certaine « coltranisation » des baffles, mais c’est probablement que la place de Coltrane dans la musique populaire est incontestable. On note aussi que le jazz moderne, le post-bop disons, occupe une place considérable (7/15), mais c’est également probablement parce que c’est la musique qui s’accorde le plus de liberté et en offre le plus (le jazz contemporain est, en contrepoint, remarquablement absent, souvent trop cérébral sans doute). Il y a deux Fela, c’est notable également, mais c’est la loi des nombres : ces deux-là ne présentent, à mon sens, pas de défaut majeur. On me reprochera l’absence ici de Dylan, de Springsteen, des Beatles, mais j’ai beau réécouter, il y a des morceaux entiers qui me tombent des oreilles. Le premier Dylan est Highway 61 Revisited (A292), le premier Springsteen est Nebraska (A390), le premier Beatles est The Beatles (A653, mais avec presque 4/5 hein !)… c’est sévère, mais c’est aussi dû à l’excellence de tous les autres (je répète la note 4 va de la 586e à la 16e place !)
Concernant les Beatles, comme pour Led Zep, je pense que le groupe est largement surestimé. J’aime beaucoup ce disque blanc, mais certaines chansons sont absolument horribles : Piggies, Obladi-Oblada, etc. C’est typiquement ce que je n’aime pas chez eux, et qui est aussi je pense la difficulté artistique, de cohérence artistique, du groupe. Abbey Road est A676, et Revolver a un peu mal vieilli à mon goût (A856). Quant à Led Zep, le II arrive 453e (4,25/5, c’est pas si mal)?

De 12 à 50
17. Antipop Consortium, The Tragic Epilogue : premier disque de hip-hop, il est certes assez expérimental, mais il dépasse tous les autres de très loin.
18. Gang Of Four, Entertainment! : le disque de post-punk le plus abouti, même si d’autres sont plus expérimentaux peut-être, celui-ci est non seulement une collection de chansons de haute tenue (avec une mélodie et des paroles, par exemple) mais il est remarquablement interprété, la palme revenant à la rythmique d’Andy Gill.
19ea. Fabrizio de Andrè, Creuza de mä : premier disque de chansons ; celui-ci est un ovni, italien, chanté en génois ; oui il y a un tropisme, de ma part, mais David Byrne a dit de lui qu’il était le meilleur disques des années 80.
19ea. Dr John, Gris-gris : brouet poisseux et mystique indépassable.
21. Nina Simone, In Concert : premier disque de jazz « classique » mais il pourrait aussi être classé en rythm’n’blues.
22. Alain Bashung, L’imprudence : le chef d’œuvre de Bashung, il n’y rien à redire.
23. Sam Rivers, Crystals : très très beau disque.
24. Joe Jackson, Look Sharp! : il pourrait être en post-punk, mais ça reste un disque mêlant les genres et donc est une pop musclée, parfaitement huilée et avec un haut niveau de morceaux. C’est son premier ; le deuxième est très bon, mais pas aussi bon, notamment dans l’écriture (et l’ironie).
25. Wynton Marsalis Septet, In This House On This Morning : un drôle de disque, parce que les grands projets de Marsalis sont souvent un peu trop élaborés (comme City Movement), cérébraux. Mais celui-ci possède un vrai souffle, une inspiration sans doute liée à la foi, sa portée mystique est incomparable, et il a de plus un invité de choix, le pianiste Eric Reed, qui transcende l’égo du trompettiste.
26ae. Antipop Consortium & Matthew Shipp, Antipop Consortium vs. Matthew Shipp : déjà un autre Antipop, avec le pianiste de jazz Matthew Shipp (et pour cela classé ‘expérimental’), pour une aventure spatiale tout a fait aboutie.
26ae. Miles Davis, Kind of Blue : jazz ou free-jazz ? Bop. Il n’a pas cinq étoiles, parce qu’il a peut-être un chouïa de malice, comparé à Monk ou Coltrane, qui à mon avis le dessert.
26ae. Thelonious Monk, Monk’s Music : Troisième Monk.
29ae. James Chance & The Contortions, Buy : comment un disque aussi bordélique peut-il être aussi génial ?
29ae. The Rolling Stones, Let it Bleed, bon, on le connaît.
29ae. Pink Floyd, The Dark Side Of The Moon : il n’est pas parfait ?!? en effet je considère Us And Them le point faible du disque, alors que ce disque signe la fin du rock, comme je l’ai dit par ailleurs. C’est leur meilleur disque, la plupart des titres sont leurs meilleurs, mais malheureusement Us And Them, très romantique, casse le génie de Time ou Money, la subversion de Speak To Me, On The Run ou Any Colour You Like.
32ae. Nick Mason & Carla Bley, Fictitious Sports : disque signé Nick Mason, mais derrière lequel il y a Carla Bley (qui signe les chansons). Extraordinaire, avec Robert Wyatt et Chris Spedding.
32ae. Patti Smith, Horses : un ensemble quasi parfait, énergique, poétique, mais qui ne connaît pas cet album ?
32ae. Fabrizio de André (2e), Le nuvole : qui, contre mes attentes, a brillament réussi son passage !
32ae. Bud Powell, The Amazing Bud Powell 01 ; un poète du jazz, lui aussi borderline.
32ae. James Brown, The Payback : malgré un léger ton de prêche, c’est assurément la meilleur section musicale de funk, la rythmique la plus acérée, les cuivres les plus intelligents.
32ae. Fela Kuti, Zombie. 3e Fela ! C’est toujours pareil, peut-être, mais c’est toujours pareil.
38ae. Vladimir Vissotsky, Le vol arrêté : certes, on reconnaît la même constance que dans le blues ou chez Brassens, mais du coup pas facile de s’en sortir : la voix et les mots.
38ae. Nick Mason, Live : le répertoire rêvé de Pink Floyd, et excellemment exécuté ; très intelligent, très Mason (tout récent, il gagne peut-être de subjectivité).
40ae. David Bowie, Blackstar (2e) : impeccable testament, des morceaux sérieux, écrits, et très émouvants.
40ae. Parliament, Mothership Connection : le funk même.
40ae. Kalil El Zabar’s Ritual Trio, Renaissance Of Resistance : magnifique trio méconnu.
43ae. Neil Young, Dead Man, une excellente improvisation sur les images du film de Jarmush, complètement en dehors des clous, extrêmement suggestive.
43ae. Pink Floyd, More (2e) Pour moi le disque charnière du groupe qui apprend à faire groupe ; aussi son meilleur avant Dark Side ; totalement méconnu, comme l’autre BO de Barbet Shroeder, La Vallée/Obscured By Clouds
43ae. Marc Ribot, Silent Movies : j’aurais pu dire la même chose ici que pour Dead Man ; toujours des improvisations, et toujours du cinéma. Quand il se laisse aller, il est moins fatigant.
46ae. Syd Barrett, Barrett : magnifique collection de morceaux déjantés, secondés par Gilmour et Wright.
46ae. Pink Floyd, Meddle (3e !) : décidément, seul ou ensemble, le Floyd occupe le terrain ; bon, One Of These Days, que dire de plus ? Echoes.
46ae. Neu!, Neu! Deuxième album de machines, un ovni, celui-là aussi, que j’ai découvert bien tard… Excellente batterie ; premier groupe allemand.
46ae. Henry Grimes Trio, The Call Excellent disque de blues jazz.
46ae. Neil Young, Tonight’s the night : fanchement, la journée partait pas d’un bon pied ; mais quand on arrive au bout c’st pire ; entre les deux, on a traversé des champs de mines de beauté suffoquée, absolue…
